“Very funny.” Boone led her to the barn, standing just outside. “You asked about Sadie.”
“Yes. You never told me.”
He grinned as he walked backward into the space, keeping both of her hands in his. “I asked Stoker to keep her because I knew Jessica could take care of her better than I could. I’m damn glad I did.”
“Is she sick?”
“Not exactly, but she couldn’t have protected herself.” Boone led them to the back stall and glanced at the one across. “Hi ya, Blaze. We’ll come say hello in just a minute.”
Stasha couldn’t help but caress Blaze’s nose, whispering softly to him. “My protector.”
Boone watched the way she reacted, the love and care in every gesture and he couldn’t stop the tears. “Come meet Sadie.”
Kissing Blaze’s nose, she walked closer, peering over the gate. Bursting into tears, she clapped her hand over her mouth. “A baby!”
“Sadie and Blaze. Meet the latest edition to our growing family. Star.”
“Oh my God. Star. You are beautiful.” Unlocking the gate, she rushed inside, fawning over the recently born colt.
Boone remained where he was, leaning against the stall. For the first time in his life, he was content, with himself and with the future. For a cowboy at heart, this was what life was all about.
